A PARALLEL EVENT WAS HELD AT THE VIENNA INTERNATIONAL CENTER UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE FIRST DEPUTY MINISTER

On September 16, 2024, in Vienna (Austria), within the framework of the 68th session of the IAEA General Conference, with the support of the OSCE, a side event was held on the theme “The Role of the International Community in Reducing the Risk Associated with Heritage Sites in Central Asia”.

The event was held under the leadership of the First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic Azamat Mambetov.

At the beginning of the event, Azamat Mambetov presented up-to-date information on the progress of reclamation work in the Kyrgyz Republic.

During his speech, the First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic noted the results achieved and identified problems associated with the lack of funding for the implementation of the Strategic Master Plan.

Azamat Mambetov called on the international community to actively support and assist in financing the Environmental Remediation Account, emphasizing the need for joint efforts to complete all projects envisaged in the Strategic Master Plan and ensure sustainable environmental restoration of the region.

The Strategic Master Plan (SMP) is a roadmap for the reclamation of tailings ponds for the countries of Central Asia, covering seven uranium legacy sites in the Kyrgyz Republic (3), the Republic of Tajikistan (2) and the Republic of Uzbekistan (2).
