IN VIENNA, THE FIRST DEPUTY MINISTER OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS OF THE KYRGYZSTAN HELD A NUMBER OF MEETINGS WITH INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS

On the sidelines of the 68th session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, First Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Azamat Mambetov met with Deputy Director General of the State Corporation Rosatom – Director of the International Activities Block Nikolai Spassky, during which they discussed issues of successful cooperation in the implementation of the Interstate Target Program “Reclamation of the Territories of States Affected by Uranium Mining Production” and future plans for reclamation work at uranium legacy sites within the framework of bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, the State Corporation Rosatom highly appreciated the role of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic as a reliable and responsible partner in the implementation of this program. Mr. N.N. Spassky also announced plans for a personal visit to the facilities in the village of Min-Kush, which emphasizes the importance and priority of this cooperation.

A meeting was also held with Mr. Balthasar Lindauer, Director of the EBRD Nuclear Safety Department, and Ms. Esther Harlander, Deputy Director of the EBRD Nuclear Safety Department and Head of the Environmental Remediation Account. During the meeting, ways to improve the coordination of efforts and resources for the implementation of projects aimed at improving radiation safety and environmental protection in Central Asia were discussed.

In addition, a constructive dialogue took place with the Scientific Secretary of the IAEA Coordination Group on Legacy Uranium Sites, Ms. Chantal Momart, during which the achievements of the Strategic Master Plan and further steps of cooperation in conducting radiological monitoring at uranium sites were discussed. In turn, Ms. Chantal Momart announced future plans for a visit to the Kyrgyz Republic to assess the radiological situation.

On September 17, another meeting between Azamat Mambetov and the Deputy Coordinator, Head of OSCE Environmental Activities Ms. Sylvie Goyette took place, during which issues of practical implementation of projects aimed at reducing the risk of radiation-hazardous environmental disasters and improving the environmental situation in areas containing radioactive waste were discussed. During the meeting, Ms. Sylvie Goyette announced a planned regional project in the field of disaster risk reduction.

In turn, Azamat Mambetov noted the relevance of this project in the context of climate change and expressed his readiness to provide support for its implementation.
