MONITORING GROUND SURVEY ON LAKE ZYNDAN-ZAPADNOE
Every year from the end of July and the beginning of August, during the period of intensive melting of glaciers and filling of lakes, employees of the Department of Monitoring and Forecasting of Emergencies conduct work to study the state of high-mountain outburst-hazardous lakes on the territory of the republic, including ground surveys and constant monitoring based on remote sensing data.
In particular, ground monitoring survey was carried out on Lake Zyndan-zapadnoye.
Note that high-mountain lakes are very dynamic objects and it is necessary to take into account many factors - the presence or absence of underground drainage channels, the condition of the dam and the presence of subsidence on it. In this regard, the lake can change the category of breakthrough hazard during one season.
Monitoring of high-mountain lakes is carried out using three methods: remote, aerial and ground-based.
Ground observations on Lake Zyndan were carried out several times in 2024, including using UAVs.
Based on the survey results, conclusions were issued to the district departments of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and local governments with recommendations for reducing the threat and the need to conduct detailed monitoring of Lake Zyndan-zapadnoye. Possible flood zones were also calculated, calculated for the current volume of the lake in the event of a breakthrough.
As a result of observations using satellite images (from August 12 to 19), employees identified a dangerous trend - the area of the lake began to decrease, which indicated the opening of drainage channels and the beginning of drainage, in connection with which the Ministry of Emergency Situations issued a repeated warning to local governments about the remaining threat of a breakthrough in the second ten days of August, taking into account the changes taking place.
The district departments of the Ministry of Emergency Situations were sent letters of instruction with recommendations on reducing the threat and the need to conduct detailed monitoring of Lake Zyndan-zapadnoye. Also, possible flood zones were calculated, calculated for the current volume of the lake in the event of a breakthrough.
All orders and written notifications about Lake Zyndan-Zapadnoye (I-167) have confirmation with dates and official signatures, and they can also be tracked through the Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) operating in the Kyrgyz Republic.
