MEETING OF THE MINISTER WITH THE HEAD OF THE EUROPEAN DELEGATION IN THE CRIMEA MARILYN JOSEPHSON

The day before, on September 19, 2024, a meeting was held at the Central Office of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic between the Minister of Emergency Situations, Major General Boobek Azhikeev, and the delegation of the European Union in the Kyrgyz Republic, headed by Ambassador Marilyn Josephson.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the status of current reclamation work at uranium legacy sites in the Kyrgyz Republic, in particular with regard to Mailuu-Suu.

During the meeting, the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations expressed gratitude and appreciation to the European Union for its support, noting the long-standing and fruitful cooperation in the area of ​​improving radiation safety and reducing the risks of disasters of both natural and man-made origin.

The issues of cooperation between the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the European Union were discussed, in particular, attention was focused on the implementation of joint projects in the field of reclamation of the uranium complex in the city of Mailuu-Suu.

In a conversation with the Ambassador of the European Union to the Kyrgyz Republic, Marilyn Josefson, it was noted that the regional risks associated with the problem of uranium tailings are due to the fact that a number of large uranium tailings, both in Kyrgyzstan and in other countries of the region, are located in close proximity to rivers and water sources, which are the basis of the water basin of the entire Central Asian region.

Gratitude was expressed to the European Commission for the financial support provided to the ERA (Environmental Remediation Account) and for the decision to become a leading member of the Assembly of Donors.

Marilyn Yosefson expressed satisfaction with the work carried out by the Ministry of Emergency Situations staff and confirmed the European Union’s readiness to continue the work.

Following the meeting, the parties thanked each other for the meeting and expressed hope and readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
