KYRGYZSTAN STRENGTHENS INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION TO REHABILITATE URANIUM LEGACY
On December 5, 2024, the Meeting of the Assembly of Contributors to the Environmental Rehabilitation Account for Central Asia (ERA), organized by the Eurasian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), was held in London. The event was attended by a Kyrgyz delegation headed by the Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, Major General B. Azhikeev.
The Minister made a statement, emphasizing that environmental and radiation safety remain the most important priorities for Kyrgyzstan. Thanks to partnerships with international organizations and financial institutions, uranium facilities in Min-Kush and Shekaftar have already been brought to a safe condition. Work is also underway to reclaim the uranium complex in Mailuu-Suu. The Minister called on donors for additional support to complete these initiatives, noting that only through joint efforts can we ensure environmental safety in the region.
The meeting approved key documents, including the ERA annual financial report and budget for 2025. The fund, established at the initiative of the EU and the EBRD, continues to play a strategic role in the rehabilitation of uranium legacy sites in Central Asia, promoting the sustainable development of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
