DROUGHT CANNOT BE PREVENTED, BUT IT CAN BE PREDICTED AND ACTIONS CAN BE TAKEN TO REDUCE DAMAGE

Specialists of the Department of Monitoring and Forecasting of Emergency Situations under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic improve their professional level.

During the period from October 31 to November 2, 2023 in the capital, the second training on capacity building of the pilot drought information system for Kyrgyzstan was held for the specialists of the Monitoring Department. The project, implemented by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and sponsored by Russia, is aimed at solving the problem of "monitoring and forecasting" of the drought management cycle.

The main objective of the project is to strengthen the capacity of target countries in Central Asia to use satellite data and geospatial information for effective drought monitoring and early warning so that these countries can access the pilot drought information system.

The Central Asian region, due to its geographical location, is vulnerable to droughts. According to statistics, the main economic risk of natural disasters in the Central Asian region is associated with earthquakes, floods, mudflows, landslides and droughts, but the largest number of victims - up to 70% - of their total number in the region is caused by droughts - this was mentioned in the next master - training.

It should be noted that this training is a continuation of the events dedicated to the implementation of CADIS. In particular, it is aimed at confirming that a regular process of drought analysis has been established, and to further enrich CADIS with the possibilities of data exchange.
