KYRGYZSTAN EMERCOM HEAD: COOPERATION IS NECESSARY TO EFFECTIVELY COUNTER NATURAL DISASTERS

Kyrgyzstan is fully experiencing the negative consequences of climate change.

The Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, Boobek Azhikeev, stated this in an interview with Report.

"The countdown can be traced back to 2004, when the frequency of natural disasters tripled. That year, more than 360 mudflows occurred in the country, more than 1,000 houses were damaged, and 22 people died, most of them women and children. These are just the consequences of heavy rains.

High seismic activity has been recorded in the past and current years: if earlier there were up to two tremors per month, now daily tremors of magnitude 4-5 are recorded. In the first 8 months of this year alone, damage from natural disasters amounted to 1.8 billion soms, or about 21.2 million US dollars," the head of the department noted.

According to him, cooperation is needed to effectively combat natural disasters in the region, since international financial institutions find it more convenient to work with a group of countries affected by a common problem within the framework of a single financing program.

"The COP29 conference is an excellent platform for discussing new climate challenges. Over two days, we held about 15 important meetings on emergency situations and adverse climate change, during which we discussed cooperation with hydrometeorological and forestry services, as well as with financial institutions such as the Asian Development Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Under normal circumstances, one such meeting could take up to 5 days. The organization of the conference is also at the highest level - from the location of the pavilions to ensuring cleanliness," B. Azhikeev emphasized.
