COP29 IN BAKU: USING MODERN TECHNOLOGIES TO MONITOR NATURAL DISASTERS
The day before, on November 13, Kyrgyzstan ceremoniously opened its national pavilion at the international climate conference COP29 in Baku.
The exhibition pays special attention to the current climate challenges facing our republic.
At the COP29 side event in Baku “Using modern technologies for monitoring natural disasters: innovations in climate risk management”, the Department of Monitoring and Forecasting of Emergencies under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic presented its achievements in this area.
One of the key projects is the Global Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) monitoring system, developed within the framework of the UNDP project in Kyrgyzstan with the support of the Government of Japan, aimed at increasing the early warning capacity of emergency services to save lives and livelihoods and the resilience of communities by improving their ability to predict, prepare for and respond to hazardous climate events.
The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, Major General Boobek Azhikeev, in his speech emphasized the importance of the project, noting that this information system ensures constant monitoring of glacial outburst lakes and allows for the prediction of possible risks, which helps to respond in a timely manner.
During this event, the Director of the Department of Monitoring and Forecasting of Emergencies under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic Daurbek Sakyev made a presentation on the results and achievements of this joint project, which has made significant progress in mitigating the risks of mudflows and reducing the vulnerability associated with the outburst of high-mountain glacial lakes.
It should be noted that the project to monitor high-mountain lakes in the Kyrgyz Republic is an example of how modern technologies help save lives and strengthen resilience to climate change.
